EDITORIAL: WHY CITIZENS MUST JOIN HANDS WITH THE CHAIRMAN OF JOS-NORTH LGC TO ENSURE A HITCH FREE CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

It would still be fresh in the minds of many that a year ago, armed men disturbed the Christmas celebrations in communities in Plateau State among others in other states in the country.

Some Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Plateau State that were hard hit by the unprovoked attacks and killings during the Black-Christmas-Eve were, Mangu, Barkin-Ladi, and Bokkos.

With the 2024 Christmas celebrations around the corner, and the need to forestall a recurrence, the Chairman of Jos-North Local Government Council (LGC) Barr. John K. Chris and security agencies operating in the Local Government Area (LGA), have been having series of meetings with different communities and stakeholders to extra commitments to ensuring a peaceful Christmas celebration this year.

It is on record and on the news that terrorists dressed as women have kidnapped 26 in Katsina, and that no fewer than 15 people have been killed on Sunday, at Gidan Ado community of Ganawuri in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, while others were injured and were now receiving treatment in a hospital.

The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, psc also in a bit to ensure a hitch free Christmas and New Year celebration, has held a strategic security meeting with Council Chairmen of some Local Government Areas of the State, at the Command Headquarters in Jos.

The meeting was also convened as part of the Commissioner's proactive and strategic efforts at ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations throughout the State, especially in the following Local Government Areas: Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos and Mangu, respectively.

After due consultation with his Management Team and critical stakeholders within the State, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police has placed restrictions on the following activities from 23rd December 2024 to 3rd January 2025, in Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos, and Mangu Local Government Areas:

- Night Grazing by herders

- Night Farming by Farmers

- Late night Operation of Beer Parlours

- Night mining activities

The CP also announce to the general public that there would be a ban on the activities of commercial Tricycles also known as, "Keke Napep" within the Jos-Bukuru Metropolis on 25th to 26th December, 2024 and on the 1st of January, 2025, while emphasizing that all these restrictions are to be in force between the hours of 06:00pm to 06:00am daily.

The call therefore on the good people of Jos-North LGA, by the LGC Chairman, Barr. John K. Chris to show commitment for safety of lives and property during this yuletide celebrations and to cooperate with the Police and other Security Agencies in ensuring that these restrictions are obeyed, is for the good of all.

Although these restrictions may cause some inconveniences on any person or group of persons. It must be noted that all of these policies are for the peace and security of all citizens in Jos-North and Plateau residents at large, and not meant to intimidate or inconvenience anyone.
