NASARAWA: GOVERNMENT BEGINS RICE HARVESTING

By: Wilson Bako (Lafia),

Nasarawa State Government has commenced the harvesting the Two Thousand (2000) heaters of rice,  cultivated as parts of the Ten Thousand heaters of land acquired for Agricultural purposes in  Jangwa village in Awe Local Government area of the state

Speaking in an interview with Newsmen on Thursday at the farm site in Jangwa village, the State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule said, his administration's intention is to lead by example and by encouraging the people of the state to embrace farming activities, so as to, “Boost food production not only in the state, but the country at large”.

In his remarks at the occasion, he dispelled rumours making the rounds that the State Government took farmers land by force for its agricultural activities, explaining that “The said land in contention was government land”.

Engineer Sule pointed out that when the state government spent so many years without cultivating the piece of land, local farmers intruded into the land and commenced cultivating the land, and as well, built their houses on the land and then, claimed ownership.

The State Governor maintained that, “now that the State Government has shown interest in cultivating the land, the intruding local farmers are now claiming ownership of the land”.

According to the Governor, “Government will not take back the entire farm, but rather, some portion would be left for the farmers while some of them would also be employed to work in the government farm”.

He disclosed that the State Government would also construct the Jangwa road to ease the transportation of farm produced, which he said were being cultivated in large quantities by farmers from the village.

Engineer Sule, who observed that the harvest was not moving as fast as expected promised to purchase additional harvester machines to speed up the harvesting process.

He commended all those that contributed to the success of the farm while assuring them that “The Government would in the nearest future include cultivating other food crops such as Maize, depending on the suitability of the soil”.
